Trailer Safety Checklist: What to Check Before You Tow

Short on time? Run through these checks before every journey:

• Towball and coupling: Connected correctly and securely locked.
• Breakaway cable or secondary coupling: Correctly attached and in good condition.
• Jockey wheel: Fully raised and secured for travel.
• Electrical connection: Plug correctly connected with cable clear of the road.
• Lights: Indicators, brake lights, rear lights and fog light working correctly.
• Tyres: Correct pressure with no obvious damage, cracking or excessive wear.
• Wheels: Secure and in good condition.
• Load: Within the trailer’s capacity, correctly positioned and securely restrained.
• Doors and ramps: Closed, locked and secured.
• Loose equipment: Stored or secured before moving.
• Number plate: Correct registration, securely fitted and clearly visible.
• Mirrors: Clear view behind the trailer with towing mirrors fitted where required.
• Trailer and vehicle weights: Combination within the relevant limits.
• Final walk-around: One last check before getting into the tow vehicle.

If anything doesn’t look or feel right, deal with it before setting off rather than assuming it will be fine for the journey.

1. Make Sure the Trailer Is Coupled Correctly

Start where the trailer meets the tow vehicle.

The coupling needs to be fully seated and correctly secured onto the towball. Don’t rely purely on appearance. Follow the coupling manufacturer’s instructions and use any security indicator or locking mechanism provided to confirm it is properly engaged.

Once connected, check around the entire coupling area.

The jockey wheel should be fully raised and secured so that it cannot drop while travelling. Any handles, clamps or other components around the drawbar should also be in their correct travelling position.

This is one of those checks that can become automatic with experience, but that’s exactly why it’s worth building a consistent routine. Take a few seconds to physically confirm the connection every time.

2. Attach the Breakaway Cable or Secondary Coupling

Your safety connection is separate from the main trailer coupling and needs checking before every journey.

Braked trailers will generally use a breakaway cable, designed to apply the trailer brakes if the trailer becomes detached from the towing vehicle. Unbraked trailers normally use a secondary coupling intended to keep the trailer attached to the vehicle if the main coupling separates.

Make sure the appropriate connection is:

• Properly attached to the designated point on the tow vehicle
• In good condition
• Routed correctly
• Free from obvious damage or excessive wear

Don’t simply loop or attach it wherever is convenient. Follow the instructions for your particular trailer and towing equipment.

3. Connect the Electrics and Check Your Lights

Once the trailer electrics are connected, check that everything actually works.

Test the:

• Indicators
• Brake lights
• Rear position lights
• Fog light
• Number plate illumination where applicable

Having another person stand behind the trailer makes this much easier. If you’re alone, you’ll need to find another safe way to confirm that the relevant lights are operating correctly.

Check the electrical plug is fully connected and that the cable isn’t hanging low enough to drag along the road. A quick visual check of the light units themselves is useful too. Dirt or damage can reduce visibility even if the bulbs or LEDs are working.

4. Inspect the Trailer Tyres and Wheels

Trailer tyres can spend long periods stationary, so low mileage doesn’t automatically mean they’re in good condition.

Look closely at each tyre for cuts, bulges, cracking, excessive wear or other visible damage. Check the pressures against the trailer or tyre manufacturer’s recommendations, ideally while the tyres are cold.

Don’t forget the inside faces of the tyres where visible, damage isn’t always on the easiest side to see.

The wheels deserve attention too. Look for anything obviously loose, damaged or unusual and make sure the wheel fixings are secure in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidance. If the trailer has been standing unused for some time, give this part of the inspection extra attention before putting it back on the road.

5. Check the Load Is Secure

A load that was correctly positioned when you started loading isn’t necessarily ready to travel.

Before setting off, check that everything is appropriately restrained and cannot move, roll, slide or fall from the trailer during the journey.

What this involves will depend heavily on the trailer and load. A machine on a Plant Trailer requires a very different approach from materials carried on a Flatbed Trailer, a vehicle on a Car Trailer or loose materials inside a Tipper Trailer.

Whatever you’re transporting, check:

• The complete load is within the trailer’s capacity
• Weight is appropriately distributed
• Suitable restraints are being used where required
• Straps and securing points are in good condition
• Nothing can become loose during normal driving
• Attachments and additional equipment have also been secured

If you’ve added equipment after initially securing the main load, check everything again.

Don’t Forget About Payload!

The weight of everything carried on the trailer contributes towards its actual loaded weight. That can include buckets, attachments, tools, spare equipment and other items that are easy to overlook.

6. Secure Doors, Ramps and Loose Equipment

Once the load itself is secure, work around the rest of the trailer.

Depending on its design, check:

• Rear and side doors
• Loading ramps
• Tailgates
• Drop sides
• Covers
• Toolboxes
• Removable components
• Any other catches, pins or fastenings

Make sure everything is completely closed and locked or secured in its travelling position.

This is particularly important after loading. A ramp, door or tailgate may have been opened earlier in the process and it’s easy to assume somebody else has secured it afterwards.

7. Check Your Number Plate and Rearward Visibility

A trailer must display the same registration number as the towing vehicle. Check that the plate is securely fitted, clearly visible and not obscured by the load or other equipment.

You also need an adequate view of the road behind you.

If the trailer is wider than the rear of your tow vehicle, additional towing mirrors may be needed to provide the required view. Make sure they’re correctly fitted and adjusted before moving rather than trying to sort your visibility once you’re already on the road.

8. Make Sure Your Trailer and Tow Vehicle Are Within Their Limits

This doesn’t need to become a calculation you repeat from scratch before every familiar journey, but you do need to know that the combination you’re using is suitable for the load. Check that the loaded trailer remains within its permitted limits and that your towing vehicle is rated for the resulting trailer weight.

If the load has changed significantly, don’t assume that a combination you’ve used previously will still be suitable.

9. Do a Final 60-Second Walk-Around

Once you think you’re ready to leave, walk around the complete towing combination one more time. You aren’t carrying out the entire inspection again. You’re looking for anything obvious that has been forgotten.

Then take a final look at the trailer from a few steps back. It’s surprising how much easier it is to spot an open catch, loose strap or something out of position when you look at the complete setup rather than one component at a time.

Keep This Checklist for Every Journey

A pre-towing check isn’t only useful when you’re learning. The more familiar you become with a trailer, the easier it can be to assume everything is ready without checking it properly.

Before your first journey, make sure the trailer is suitable for your tow vehicle and that you understand the relevant weight limits. Once those basics are covered, the next step is getting used to how the trailer behaves on the road.

Before You Tow for the First Time

Your first towing journey doesn’t need to be the most difficult one.

If possible, choose a familiar route and avoid particularly busy roads until you’ve had a chance to get used to the trailer. Allow plenty of time for the journey so you’re not rushing, particularly if you’ll need to manoeuvre the trailer when you arrive.

Before setting off:

• Adjust your mirrors so you have a clear view behind the trailer.
• Familiarise yourself with the trailer’s width and length, particularly if it’s considerably larger than your tow vehicle.
• Plan your route, looking out for narrow roads, tight entrances or other potential difficulties.
• Practise somewhere suitable if you’ve never manoeuvred a trailer before.
• Know where you’ll park or unload when you reach your destination, if possible.

How Does Driving Change When You’re Towing a Trailer?

Even a relatively small trailer changes the dimensions and behaviour of your vehicle. Larger or more heavily loaded trailers make those differences more noticeable.

For a first-time tower, there are four main changes to get used to:

None of these require you to completely change the way you drive. They simply mean planning further ahead and making your inputs more gradual.

You’ll also need to use your mirrors more frequently. Get into the habit of checking where the trailer is positioned, particularly before turning, changing direction or moving around an obstruction.

Pulling Away With a Trailer

Take your time when you first start moving. Accelerate progressively rather than trying to get up to speed quickly. Depending on the trailer and load, the tow vehicle may feel noticeably less responsive than it normally does.

This is particularly important when pulling onto a roundabout, joining a main road or moving out of a junction. A gap you’d normally use without hesitation may not be large enough when towing because the combination takes longer to move and clear the junction.

Your first few miles are also a good opportunity to get a feel for the trailer. Pay attention to how the vehicle accelerates, how much additional space you’re using and whether the trailer feels settled behind you.

If anything feels unusual, find somewhere safe to stop and check the trailer rather than continuing with the journey.

Cutlers Tip: Don’t allow traffic behind you to rush your decisions. Waiting for a larger gap or taking a turn more slowly is far better than attempting a manoeuvre before you’re comfortable with it.

Braking Safely When Towing

The extra weight behind your vehicle means you should think about slowing down earlier than you would during normal driving.

Look well ahead for junctions, roundabouts, queues and changes in traffic speed. Coming off the accelerator sooner and braking progressively gives the whole combination more time to slow down smoothly.

You should also increase the distance between yourself and the vehicle ahead. That extra space gives you more time to react if traffic suddenly slows.

Poor weather makes this even more important. Wet, icy or otherwise slippery roads can increase stopping distances, so adjust your speed and following distance to suit the conditions.

For the driver, the principle remains the same: look ahead, leave more room and avoid unnecessarily harsh braking.

How to Corner Safely With a Trailer

Turning is one of the first differences you’ll notice when towing.

The trailer doesn’t follow exactly the same path as your tow vehicle. As you turn, its wheels generally travel on a tighter line. This is often referred to as the trailer cutting in.

Imagine you’re making a left turn into a narrow entrance. The tow vehicle may comfortably clear the kerb or gatepost, but the trailer behind you will follow a tighter route towards the inside of the turn.

That’s why you need to think about the position of the trailer wheels, not just whether the tow vehicle itself has cleared the obstacle.

When approaching a tighter turn:

• Reduce your speed before entering it.
• Give yourself more room where it is safe to do so.
• Keep checking the trailer’s position in your mirrors.
• Allow extra clearance around kerbs, walls, parked vehicles and gateposts.
• Make smooth steering inputs rather than suddenly correcting your line.

The longer the trailer, the more noticeable this difference can become. It’s particularly relevant when entering yards, farms, building sites, driveways or other locations where space is restricted.

If you’re unsure whether you’ll clear something, stop and check rather than guessing. There’s no benefit to rushing a tight manoeuvre, especially when you’re still learning how the trailer follows your vehicle.

Once you’ve become comfortable with pulling away, braking and turning, the next skill to tackle is the one that tends to concern new towers most: reversing a trailer.

How to Reverse a Trailer

Reversing is often the part of towing that takes the most practice. The trailer reacts differently to the direction you’re steering, and once it starts turning, relatively small steering movements can quickly change its angle.

The best way to learn is slowly and somewhere with plenty of room.

Start with the tow vehicle and trailer as straight as possible. Reverse at a very low speed and make small steering adjustments, watching the trailer carefully in your mirrors.

As you get used to it:

• Keep your movements small. Large steering inputs can quickly put the trailer at a difficult angle.
• Use both mirrors. This helps you judge the trailer’s position rather than relying on one side.
• Take your time. Reversing becomes much easier when everything is happening slowly.
• Pull forward and reset if necessary. Don’t keep trying to correct a manoeuvre that has already gone wrong.

Use someone to guide you where appropriate and make sure you can clearly see or communicate with them throughout the manoeuvre.

If you’re reversing into a tight entrance or somewhere with obstacles, stop and get out to check your surroundings whenever you’re unsure. For a first-time tower, pulling forward and starting again is completely normal. Even experienced drivers will reset a manoeuvre when it gives them a better approach.

Cutlers Tip: Practise reversing before you’re in a situation where you have to get it right. An empty yard or another suitable open space gives you a chance to understand how steering affects the trailer without the pressure of a narrow gateway or busy site.

Towing on Motorways and Faster Roads

Higher speeds require more awareness of the trailer and the traffic around you.

For cars towing trailers, the national speed limit is 50mph on single carriageways and 60mph on dual carriageways and motorways. Lower signed limits still apply, and the speed limit is a maximum rather than a target.

On a motorway, keep left unless you’re overtaking and give yourself plenty of time before changing lanes. Remember that your trailer still needs to clear the vehicle you’ve passed before you move back across.

There is also an important lane restriction for first-time towers to know: a vehicle drawing a trailer must not use the right-hand lane of a motorway with three or more lanes, except in prescribed circumstances.

Strong winds can make towing more difficult, particularly with larger or high-sided trailers. Passing or being passed by large vehicles can also affect the airflow around your trailer, so keep your steering controlled and avoid sudden movements. Official UK driving standards specifically identify strong winds as a hazard when towing high-sided trailers.

Towing Up and Down Hills

The effect of additional weight often becomes more obvious on hills. When travelling uphill, expect acceleration to be slower than it would be without a trailer. Look ahead and plan accordingly rather than accelerating aggressively to try to maintain your normal pace.

Descending a hill requires just as much consideration. Don’t allow the additional weight behind you to build up more speed than you’re comfortable controlling.

Reduce your speed in good time before steeper descents and use the tow vehicle appropriately to maintain a controlled speed. Avoid waiting until the combination has gathered excessive speed and then relying on heavy braking to bring it back under control. The aim isn’t to descend quickly. It’s to keep the vehicle and trailer settled and predictable throughout.

What Should You Do If a Trailer Starts to Snake?

“Snaking” describes the trailer beginning to sway from side to side behind the towing vehicle. It can be unsettling, particularly if you’ve never experienced it before.

If the trailer starts to snake or swerve, don’t respond with harsh braking.

The Highway Code advises drivers to ease off the accelerator and reduce speed gently until control is regained. GOV.UK also identifies excessive speed or incorrect trailer loading as potential causes of snaking.

Once the combination is stable, find somewhere safe to stop and check the trailer rather than simply carrying on at the same speed.

Pay particular attention to the load and its distribution. The Highway Code advises distributing weight evenly, with heavy items over the axle or axles, while remaining within the manufacturer’s recommended limits. Correct loading helps minimise the possibility of snaking and loss of control.

If the trailer repeatedly feels unstable, don’t ignore it. There may be an issue with the loading, speed, trailer or towing combination that needs addressing before you continue.

Think Ahead When You Arrive

Safe towing doesn’t finish when you reach your destination. Before turning into a yard, field, driveway or site, take a moment to consider where you’re going to put the trailer. A little planning can prevent you from having to attempt a much more difficult manoeuvre afterwards.

Think about:

• Where you have enough room to turn or reverse
• Whether you’ll need access to a rear ramp or doors
• Where the trailer needs to be positioned for loading or unloading
• Whether you’ll be able to drive out again easily
• Any people, vehicles or obstacles around the manoeuvring area

If someone is guiding you into position, agree how you’ll communicate before starting and stop if you lose sight of them.

Once parked, secure the trailer appropriately before loading, unloading or unhitching.

What You’ll Quickly Learn About Towing

Your first journey will probably require far more concentration than your tenth. That’s normal. As you gain experience, judging the trailer’s position and allowing for its additional size becomes much more natural.

A few habits are particularly worth carrying forward:

• Don’t rush because someone is waiting. Take the time you need to complete a turn or manoeuvre safely.
• Use your mirrors constantly. They tell you far more about what the trailer is doing than you’ll feel through the steering wheel alone.
• Look further ahead. Early decisions mean less harsh braking, acceleration and steering.
• Reset a manoeuvre when you need to. Pulling forward and trying again is often the quickest way to correct a difficult reverse.
• Pay attention when something feels different. A new noise, unexpected movement or change in handling is a reason to find somewhere safe to stop and check.

Every trailer also behaves slightly differently. Size, weight, load and trailer design all affect how the combination feels, so give yourself time to become familiar with a new trailer rather than assuming it will behave exactly like the last one you used.

Before Your Next Journey

Learning how to drive with a trailer is only one part of safe towing. Before setting off, you also need to know that the trailer is correctly coupled, roadworthy and ready for the journey.

The key is not to focus on one headline figure. A trailer may be rated to 3,500kg, for example, but that doesn’t mean you can put 3,500kg of machinery, materials or equipment onto it. The weight of the trailer itself needs to be accounted for, as do the limits of the vehicle you’re using to tow it.

This guide explains the main trailer weight terms, how to calculate payload and how to use the figures when comparing trailers.

Trailer Weight Terms at a Glance

Before we start calculating anything, these are the main figures you’ll come across:

You’ll find these figures in different places depending on what you’re checking. Trailer specifications and identification plates provide information about the trailer, while your vehicle handbook, specification and VIN plate provide the figures relevant to your tow vehicle. The important thing is that these limits work together. Staying within the trailer’s MAM doesn’t automatically mean you’re within the limits of your towing vehicle.

What Is a Trailer’s MAM?

MAM stands for Maximum Authorised Mass. It is the maximum permitted weight of the trailer when fully loaded. You may also see this described as the trailer’s gross weight.

If a trailer has a MAM of 3,500kg, the combined weight of the trailer itself and everything loaded onto it must remain within that figure.

This is where a common misunderstanding can occur. A 3,500kg MAM doesn’t mean you have 3,500kg of carrying capacity. Some of that allowance is already taken up by the trailer itself.

To work out how much you can actually carry, you need the trailer’s unladen weight too.

What Is the Unladen Weight of a Trailer?

The unladen weight is the weight of the trailer before your load is added. Different trailer designs can have very different unladen weights, even where their overall MAM is similar. Construction materials, dimensions, axles, ramps, bodywork and other equipment can all affect how much the trailer itself weighs.

This matters because every kilogram of trailer weight uses some of its maximum permitted mass.

Imagine two trailers are both rated to 3,500kg MAM:

Both trailers have the same headline MAM, but Trailer A provides an additional 300kg of payload. That’s why comparing MAM alone doesn’t tell you which trailer offers the carrying capacity you need.

What Does Trailer Payload Mean?

Payload is the amount of weight you can add to the trailer without exceeding its MAM.

For trailer buyers, it’s one of the most useful specifications to understand because it tells you whether the trailer can actually carry the vehicle, machine, horse, materials or equipment you need to transport.

The basic calculation is straightforward:

Trailer MAM − Trailer unladen weight = Maximum payload

For example:

• MAM: 3,500kg
• Unladen weight: 900kg
• Maximum payload: 2,600kg

So although this is described as a 3,500kg trailer, the maximum payload is 2,600kg.

If you’re comparing Plant Trailers for a mini excavator weighing 2,400kg, that difference matters. A trailer with a 2,600kg payload provides 200kg of remaining capacity, but attachments or additional equipment carried on the trailer could quickly use that allowance.

The same principle applies whether you’re transporting machinery, vehicles, horses or materials. Work from the complete load rather than the weight of the main item alone.

MAM vs Actual Loaded Weight

MAM tells you the maximum the trailer is permitted to weigh, not what it weighs every time it’s used.

Take our previous example:

• Trailer MAM: 3,500kg
• Unladen weight: 900kg
• Load being carried: 1,500kg

The trailer’s actual loaded weight would be:

900kg + 1,500kg = 2,400kg

Its MAM remains 3,500kg, but you’re currently towing 2,400kg of trailer and load.

This distinction becomes important when you’re comparing a trailer with the capabilities of your tow vehicle. Seeing 3,500kg MAM on a trailer doesn’t necessarily mean that 3,500kg will be sitting behind your vehicle every time you use it.

However, MAM can still be relevant to other towing requirements, including driving licence entitlement. We’ve covered that separately in our What Driving Licence Do You Need to Tow a Trailer? guide rather than repeating the licence rules here.

What Is Vehicle Towing Capacity?

Once you know what your trailer and load will weigh, the next figure to check belongs to the towing vehicle. Towing capacity is the maximum trailer weight the vehicle manufacturer specifies that the vehicle can tow.

This isn’t determined by how powerful or substantial the vehicle looks. Different engines, transmissions and versions of otherwise similar vehicles can have different limits, so always check the specification for the exact vehicle you’re using.

Most cars have a maximum towing weight listed in the handbook or specification information. Depending on the vehicle, you may also see separate figures for braked and unbraked trailers.

If you’re comparing these figures with a trailer, remember that towing capacity relates to the trailer and its load, not simply its payload.

For example:

• Trailer unladen weight: 900kg
• Load: 1,800kg
• Actual loaded trailer weight: 2,700kg

Your tow vehicle therefore needs to be suitable for the 2,700kg loaded trailer, not just the 1,800kg being carried.

What Is Gross Train Weight?

Gross Train Weight (GTW) is the maximum permitted combined weight of the fully loaded towing vehicle and fully loaded trailer. This is another figure that can affect what you’re actually able to tow.

GOV.UK advises that the gross train weight may be shown on the vehicle’s VIN plate, normally located under the bonnet or inside the driver’s door. If the VIN plate doesn’t list a train weight, GOV.UK states that you should not use the vehicle for towing.

The important distinction is that towing capacity looks at what the vehicle can tow, while GTW places a limit on the combined weight of the towing vehicle and trailer.

How GTW Affects What You Can Tow

This is easiest to understand with an example.

Imagine a vehicle has:

GTW: 6,000kg

Maximum towing capacity: 3,500kg

Actual loaded vehicle weight: 2,800kg

There is:

6,000kg − 2,800kg = 3,200kg remaining within the vehicle’s GTW.

Despite the vehicle having a headline towing capacity of 3,500kg, loading the trailer to 3,500kg in this example would result in a combined actual weight of 6,300kg, exceeding the 6,000kg GTW.

Reducing the amount carried in the tow vehicle could change the calculation, but you still need to remain within every other applicable limit.

The reverse can happen too. If the GTW leaves enough capacity for a 3,500kg trailer but the manufacturer’s towing capacity is only 3,000kg, you don’t suddenly gain another 500kg of towing capacity.

You need to remain within both limits.

This is why towing capacity, trailer MAM and GTW shouldn’t be looked at independently. Once you understand how they interact, comparing trailers becomes much easier because you can concentrate on the capacity that’s genuinely available for the load you need to move.

How Trailer Weight, Payload and Towing Capacity Work Together

Once you understand the individual figures, the important part is knowing how they affect the trailer you can actually use.

Imagine you’re considering a trailer with the following specifications:

Trailer MAM: 3,500kg

Trailer unladen weight: 900kg

Maximum trailer payload: 2,600kg

Your tow vehicle has a maximum towing capacity of:

3,000kg

The trailer itself is capable of carrying up to 2,600kg, but you can’t use all of that payload behind this particular vehicle.

With the trailer already weighing 900kg:

3,000kg towing capacity − 900kg trailer weight = 2,100kg

Subject to the vehicle’s GTW and any other applicable limits, that leaves a maximum of 2,100kg for the load when using this particular combination.

Put the same trailer behind a suitably rated tow vehicle and more of its available payload may become usable.

This is why a trailer’s maximum payload and your vehicle’s towing capacity shouldn’t be treated as interchangeable figures. The trailer, load and tow vehicle all need to work together.

How Much Trailer Payload Do You Need?

Choosing the right payload starts with establishing what you’ll actually be transporting.

Ideally, don’t base this on a rough estimate. Find an accurate weight for the vehicle, machine or other load wherever possible, then account for anything else that will travel on the trailer.

The calculation will look slightly different depending on what you’re carrying:

This is also why buying solely on the weight of your main load can leave you short of capacity. A 2,300kg machine might appear comfortably within a 2,500kg trailer payload, for example. Add a 150kg attachment and another 100kg of equipment and that margin has disappeared.

If you’re regularly carrying different loads, think about your heaviest realistic setup, rather than only what you need to transport today.

Don’t Forget the Extras!

Some of the easiest weight to overlook comes from relatively small items.

Depending on the trailer and how you use it, this could include:

• Buckets and machine attachments
• Tools and equipment
• Spare wheels
• Additional ramps
• Tack and equipment
• Straps and load-securing equipment
• Anything else stored or carried on the trailer

Individually, some of these may not weigh very much. Together, they can make a meaningful difference when you’re already close to the trailer or vehicle limit.

Load position matters as well as total weight. The trailer’s applicable axle limits must be observed, and the load should be positioned correctly rather than simply placed wherever it fits. Correct loading also helps maintain appropriate noseweight and a stable towing setup.

For the purpose of choosing your trailer, however, the first job is simple: make sure everything you intend to put onto or into the trailer has been included in your payload calculation.

Where to Find Your Trailer and Vehicle Weight Information

You shouldn’t need to guess any of the main figures we’ve covered.

On the trailer

Check the trailer’s identification or specification plate and manufacturer information. Depending on the trailer, this can provide details including its MAM and axle ratings.

The manufacturer’s specifications can also help you establish the trailer’s unladen weight and available payload.

On the tow vehicle

Check the handbook or specification information for the manufacturer’s towing capacity.

The vehicle’s VIN plate provides important weight information too, including the vehicle’s maximum authorised weight and, where applicable, gross train weight.

Because specifications can vary between different versions of the same vehicle, make sure you’re checking figures for the exact model, engine and configuration you’re using, rather than relying on a general figure found online.

A Simple Trailer Weight Check Before You Buy

If you’re comparing trailers and the terminology is starting to become confusing, bring everything back to five checks.

1. Find the trailer’s MAM and unladen weight

These give you the starting figures for understanding its carrying capacity.

2. Calculate the available payload

Subtract the unladen weight from the MAM.

3. Calculate the complete weight of your load

Include equipment, attachments and anything else that will travel on the trailer.

4. Check your tow vehicle

Compare the actual loaded trailer weight with the manufacturer’s towing capacity and make sure the complete combination remains within the applicable GTW.

5. Make sure the figures work together

The trailer needs enough payload for the job, but your vehicle must also be suitable for towing the resulting loaded weight.

Choosing a Trailer With the Right Payload

More capacity isn’t automatically better. The aim is to find a trailer that provides enough usable payload for what you need to carry while remaining suitable for your towing vehicle.

If you got your driving licence before 1 January 1997, you can usually drive a vehicle and trailer with a combined maximum authorised mass (MAM) of up to 8,250kg. If you got your licence from 1 January 1997, you can tow a trailer with a MAM of up to 3,500kg under Category BE entitlement.

However, your driving licence is only one part of the calculation. Your towing vehicle and trailer have their own weight limits, and these still apply regardless of what your licence allows you to drive.

UK Trailer Towing Licence Rules at a Glance

The first thing you need to know is when you passed your car driving test.

These figures describe driving licence entitlement. They don’t mean that every vehicle can tow up to these weights.

For example, having Category BE entitlement doesn’t automatically allow you to tow a 3,500kg trailer behind your current car. The vehicle must also be designed and rated to tow the trailer, and all applicable vehicle, trailer and combination weight limits must be observed.

What Changed to Trailer Towing Licences in December 2021?

If you’ve researched trailer towing before, you may have come across information about taking an additional car and trailer driving test. This is where much of the confusion comes from.

Before the rules changed on 16 December 2021, drivers who passed their car test from 1 January 1997 faced tighter restrictions on the combinations they could tow using their Category B entitlement. Depending on the vehicle and trailer combination, an additional B+E driving test could be required.

The separate car and trailer test was subsequently removed and the entitlement changed. Under the current rules, drivers who got their licence from 1 January 1997 can tow a trailer with a MAM of up to 3,500kg under Category BE entitlement, subject to the relevant vehicle and trailer limits.

This is important when you’re researching towing online. Guidance written before the December 2021 changes may refer to tests and restrictions that no longer reflect the current rules.

What Can You Tow If You Passed Your Test Before 1 January 1997?

Drivers who obtained their licence before 1 January 1997 generally have broader existing towing entitlements. According to GOV.UK, you can usually drive a vehicle and trailer with a combined MAM of up to 8,250kg.

The word usually is important. Rather than assuming you have a particular entitlement based purely on your age or the date you passed your test, check the categories attached to your individual driving licence.

You can do this through the official GOV.UK driving licence service.

It’s also important not to confuse the 8,250kg licence figure with the towing capability of your vehicle. Even if your licence permits a heavier combination, you still need to remain within the limits specified for the vehicle and trailer you’re actually using.

What Can You Tow If You Passed Your Test From 1 January 1997?

If you got your car driving licence from 1 January 1997, GOV.UK states that you can tow a trailer weighing up to 3,500kg MAM. This is known as Category BE.

But there’s an important distinction:

3,500kg is the maximum trailer MAM covered by this licence entitlement. It isn’t a universal 3,500kg towing capacity.

Your tow vehicle might have a maximum permitted towing weight considerably below this figure. If that’s the case, the vehicle’s limits still need to be observed.

This becomes particularly important when you’re moving heavier loads. A plant trailer may be rated to operate at 3,500kg MAM, for example, but that doesn’t mean you can load it to that weight and tow it with any Category B vehicle. Before choosing a trailer, you therefore need to look at the licence, tow vehicle and trailer together.

What Does Category BE Mean?

Category BE is the driving licence category covering a Category B vehicle towing a trailer. Under the current GOV.UK rules, drivers who got their car licence from 1 January 1997 can tow a trailer with a MAM of up to 3,500kg under this entitlement.

You may notice that BE isn’t shown on your physical driving licence, particularly if your photocard hasn’t been renewed since the towing rules changed.

That doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t have the entitlement. GOV.UK states that DVLA will add Category BE to the physical driving licence the next time it is renewed. You can check your current vehicle categories using the government’s online driving licence service rather than relying solely on what’s printed on an older photocard.

Again, Category BE describes what your licence permits you to drive. It doesn’t change the manufacturer’s limits for the vehicle you’re using.

What Is MAM and Why Does It Matter?

Maximum authorised mass, usually shortened to MAM, is the maximum permitted weight of a vehicle or trailer when fully loaded.

It’s an important term to understand because UK driving licence entitlements are expressed using MAM rather than simply the weight of the trailer when it’s empty.

For example, if a trailer has:

Unladen weight: 900kg

MAM: 3,500kg

its MAM is still 3,500kg even when there’s nothing loaded onto it. You’ll normally find MAM in the owner’s manual or on a plate or sticker fitted to the vehicle or trailer.

MAM is also different from payload, towing capacity and gross train weight (GTW). These figures are closely related, but they don’t mean the same thing. For the purpose of checking your driving licence, the key thing to remember is that MAM refers to the maximum authorised loaded weight, not simply what the trailer happens to weigh on the day you’re towing it.

Your Driving Licence Isn’t Your Vehicle’s Towing Capacity

Being licensed to tow a trailer with a MAM of up to 3,500kg doesn’t mean your vehicle can tow 3,500kg.

Most cars have a maximum towing weight specified by the manufacturer. GOV.UK advises checking the vehicle handbook or specification sheet for this information.

You may also find the vehicle’s gross train weight on its VIN plate, normally located under the bonnet or inside the driver’s door. Gross train weight is the permitted weight of the fully loaded towing vehicle and fully loaded trailer combined, and it must not be exceeded. GOV.UK also advises that if the VIN plate doesn’t list a train weight, the vehicle shouldn’t be used for towing.

A useful way to think about it is:

• Your driving licence determines the categories of vehicle and trailer you’re entitled to drive.
• Your tow vehicle determines what that particular vehicle is designed and permitted to tow.
• Your trailer has its own maximum weight and payload limits.

All three need to be compatible!

So, if your licence permits a trailer with a MAM of up to 3,500kg but your car is only rated to tow 2,000kg, your licence entitlement doesn’t increase the car’s towing capacity to 3,500kg.

This distinction becomes particularly important when choosing larger trailers and heavier loads. Understanding the numbers before you buy can prevent you from ending up with a trailer that’s perfectly suitable for the load, but not for the vehicle you intended to tow it with.

What Does This Mean for the Trailer You Want to Tow?

Licence categories and MAM figures make more sense when you put them into the context of a real trailer. The trailer itself is only one part of the calculation. You also need to consider what you’re loading onto it and whether your tow vehicle is suitable for the resulting weight.

Here are a few common examples.

Utility and General Purpose Trailers

Smaller Utility Trailers and General Purpose Trailers are often used for garden waste, tools, DIY materials and lighter equipment.

Some models fall into the unbraked category, while larger versions may be braked. Either way, check the trailer’s MAM alongside your vehicle’s towing limits rather than assuming that a smaller trailer will automatically be suitable.

Payload matters too. If you’re regularly transporting heavier materials or equipment, it’s surprisingly easy for the total loaded weight to increase.

Horse Trailers

Most Horse Trailers are braked and can have relatively high maximum authorised masses, so checking the complete setup is particularly important.

Don’t consider the trailer alone. You need to account for the horse or horses being transported, any tack or equipment carried in the trailer and the capabilities of your towing vehicle.

Car Trailers

With a Car Trailer, the vehicle being transported can make up a substantial proportion of the total load.

A lightweight competition car and a large road car can place very different demands on the same trailer. Before choosing a transporter, check the trailer’s available payload against the weight of the vehicle you intend to carry, then make sure the resulting combination falls within the relevant limits for your tow vehicle and driving licence.

Plant Trailers

Plant machinery can be deceptively heavy, particularly once buckets, attachments and additional equipment are included.

Do You Still Need to Take a Trailer Towing Test?

For most drivers towing within their Category BE entitlement, you no longer need to pass the separate car and trailer test that existed under the previous rules.

That doesn’t mean training has no value.

Towing changes the way a vehicle accelerates, brakes, corners and reverses, and handling a large trailer for the first time can be very different from normal driving. This can be especially noticeable with horse trailers, car transporters and larger commercial trailers.

Drivers who are new to towing may therefore choose to undertake practical training even when there is no requirement to pass the old B+E test. GOV.UK provides information on trailer training and recognised training providers as part of its towing guidance.

What If You Need to Tow a Heavier Combination?

The Category B and BE rules cover a large proportion of everyday trailer users, but heavier vehicle and trailer combinations can require additional licence entitlement.

According to GOV.UK, if you need to tow a combination heavier than your current licence allows, you may need to obtain Category C1+E entitlement.

This involves obtaining the relevant provisional entitlement and passing the required theory and practical tests. Once qualified, GOV.UK states that C1+E allows vehicles and trailers with a combined MAM of up to 12,000kg.

This moves beyond the typical car-and-trailer setup, so we’d strongly recommend checking your individual circumstances through GOV.UK before driving a heavier combination.

The important point for trailer buyers is to establish this before choosing equipment. If your intended vehicle, trailer and load take you beyond your existing licence entitlement, changing trailer size alone may not solve the problem.

Does Towing for Work Affect the Rules?

If you’re buying a trailer for your business, holding the correct driving licence remains essential, but it may not be the only requirement that applies.

Commercial towing can introduce additional rules depending on the vehicle, trailer, combination weight, type of work and how the vehicle is being used. For heavier combinations, additional licence categories may be necessary and Driver Certificate of Professional Competence requirements can apply in certain circumstances.

GOV.UK specifically notes that additional Driver CPC tests are required in some circumstances where driving a medium-sized lorry forms the main part of your job.

Rather than assuming that a normal car-and-trailer entitlement covers every commercial situation, check the rules that apply to your particular work and combination.

This is especially relevant when buying larger Plant Trailers, Tipper Trailers or Flatbed Trailers for regular business use, where loads and vehicle combinations can be substantially heavier than those used for occasional domestic towing.

Three Things to Check Before Choosing a Trailer

You don’t need to memorise every towing term before you start shopping. Instead, there are three things worth establishing early.

1. Check your driving licence

Find out exactly which categories you’re entitled to drive rather than relying solely on when you remember passing your test. You can check your current entitlement through GOV.UK, which is particularly useful if Category BE isn’t yet displayed on your physical licence.

2. Check your towing vehicle

Find the manufacturer’s maximum towing capacity and check the relevant information on the vehicle’s VIN plate. Don’t assume that a large or powerful vehicle can automatically tow a particular trailer. The manufacturer’s stated limits are what matter.

3. Check the trailer and your intended load

Look at the trailer’s MAM, unladen weight and available payload, then consider what you’ll actually be carrying.

If you’re transporting machinery or vehicles, use accurate weights wherever possible. For horses and equipment, make sure you’re allowing sufficient capacity for everything travelling inside the trailer rather than calculating around the horse alone.

If the licence, vehicle and trailer don’t work together, choosing a different combination may be necessary.

This allows braked trailers to accommodate heavier loads, which is why they’re commonly used for everything from transporting horses and cars to moving plant machinery.

For lighter loads and everyday jobs, however, an unbraked trailer can be a simpler and highly practical option.

The right choice depends on what you’re carrying, the total weight of the loaded trailer and the towing limits of your vehicle. In this guide, we’ll explain those differences clearly and help you work out whether a braked or unbraked trailer is the better fit.

Braked vs Unbraked Trailers at a Glance

If you’re looking for the quick answer, here’s how the two compare.

The 750kg figure is important, but it shouldn’t be treated as an automatic allowance to tow an unbraked trailer at that weight. Your vehicle may have a lower permitted unbraked towing capacity, so both the trailer and tow vehicle limits need to be checked before setting off. The Camping and Caravanning Club makes the same distinction in its guidance, noting that individual manufacturers can specify substantially lower unbraked limits for particular vehicles.

What Is an Unbraked Trailer?

An unbraked trailer doesn’t have a braking system of its own. When you slow the towing vehicle, its brakes are responsible for slowing both the vehicle and the trailer behind it.

This simplicity is one of the reasons unbraked trailers remain such a practical option for lighter loads. There are fewer braking components to maintain, the trailers themselves can be compact and lightweight, and they’re well suited to jobs where the additional capacity of a larger braked trailer simply isn’t necessary.

Typical uses might include transporting:

• Garden waste and landscaping materials.
• DIY and household items.
• Lighter tools and equipment.
• Camping or leisure equipment.
• Smaller loads around a farm, estate or business.

For someone who needs a trailer for occasional jobs around the home or relatively light everyday work, an unbraked Utility Trailer or General Purpose Trailer may therefore provide everything required without moving into a larger, heavier trailer.

However, the weight of the load matters enormously. An unbraked trailer can have a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of no more than 750kg, and that figure includes the weight of the trailer itself rather than simply the goods you’ve loaded into it.

So, if an unbraked trailer has a MAM of 750kg and weighs 200kg before you’ve loaded anything, the available payload would be 550kg. 

What Is a Braked Trailer?

A braked trailer has a braking system that helps slow the trailer when the towing vehicle brakes, rather than relying entirely on the tow vehicle to control the additional weight. On many trailers commonly used in the UK, this is achieved through an overrun braking system.

As the towing vehicle slows, the forward momentum of the trailer compresses the coupling mechanism. This movement operates the trailer’s brakes mechanically, helping to slow the trailer alongside the towing vehicle. When the towing vehicle accelerates again and the braking force is no longer required, the mechanism releases.

For the buyer, the important point isn’t necessarily the engineering behind the system. It’s what having those brakes allows the trailer to do.

Braked trailers can accommodate significantly heavier loads than unbraked models, which makes them the natural choice for many specialist and commercial applications. 

This includes:

• Horse Trailers
• Car Trailers
• Plant Trailers
• Larger Tipper Trailers
• Heavier Flatbed Trailers
• Many commercial and agricultural trailers.

If you’re transporting a mini excavator, vehicle or horse, for example, an unbraked trailer isn’t realistically going to provide the capacity you need. Purpose-built braked trailers are designed around these heavier loads and the demands associated with transporting them.

Braked trailers do introduce additional components that need to be maintained, including the braking mechanism itself, but for heavier transport this isn’t an optional upgrade. It’s an essential part of the trailer’s design.

When Does a Trailer Need Brakes in the UK?

This is where it’s particularly important to separate two different questions:

Does the trailer legally require brakes?

and:

How much is my particular vehicle allowed to tow?

They aren’t necessarily the same thing. Under UK requirements, trailers with a maximum authorised mass above 750kg must have a braking system. An unbraked trailer therefore cannot have a MAM exceeding 750kg.

However, that doesn’t automatically mean you can attach any 750kg unbraked trailer to any car and load it to its maximum weight.

The towing vehicle has its own limits.

A manufacturer might specify one maximum towing capacity for a braked trailer and a considerably lower figure for an unbraked trailer. The Camping and Caravanning Club gives the example of a small car that may only be permitted to tow an unbraked trailer weighing 350kg, despite the general 750kg trailer threshold.

This means you need to check:

The trailer’s MAM – The maximum permitted weight of the trailer when fully loaded.

The vehicle’s unbraked towing capacity – If you’re considering an unbraked trailer, this may be below 750kg.

The vehicle’s braked towing capacity – This tells you the maximum braked trailer weight your particular vehicle is designed to tow.

For this decision, the important takeaway is simple: 750kg is the upper threshold for an unbraked trailer, not a universal towing allowance for every vehicle.

Which Is Right for What You’re Carrying?

Once you understand the weight difference, choosing between a braked and unbraked trailer becomes much easier because the load itself usually points you in the right direction.

Garden waste, DIY materials and occasional loads

For lighter jobs around the home, garden or workplace, an unbraked trailer can be an excellent solution. If the complete loaded trailer remains within both its own limits and those of the towing vehicle, there’s little benefit in buying more trailer than you actually need.

A smaller General Purpose Trailer or Utility Trailer can be particularly useful if you want something that’s straightforward to store and versatile enough to handle different everyday jobs.

Tools and lighter work equipment

This one depends much more heavily on weight. A tradesperson carrying a relatively small amount of equipment may find an unbraked trailer perfectly adequate, while heavier tools, machinery and materials can quickly push the total loaded weight beyond what’s possible with an unbraked model.

Don’t estimate here. Work out roughly what you’ll regularly carry and leave enough capacity for the items that tend to get added later.

Landscaping and grounds maintenance

Either option could be appropriate depending on the work involved.

Green waste, hand tools and lighter equipment may sit comfortably within the limits of an unbraked trailer. Once you’re regularly transporting compact machinery, heavier materials or larger quantities of equipment, a braked trailer is likely to become the more appropriate option.

Mini excavators and plant machinery

This is firmly braked trailer territory. Mini diggers, dumpers, rollers and their attachments require the payload and construction offered by dedicated Plant Trailers. Buyers can then compare designs such as Beavertail Trailers and Tiltbed Trailers depending on the machinery being transported and preferred loading method.

Cars and other vehicles

Vehicle transport requires a purpose-built braked Car Trailer with sufficient capacity for the vehicle being carried.

The same principle we’ve discussed throughout this guide applies here too. Don’t just check whether the car physically fits on the trailer. Its weight, the trailer’s available payload and the towing capacity of the tow vehicle all need to work together.

Horses

Horse transport requires a purpose-built Horse Trailer, with braked trailers providing the capacity and specialist design required for safe equine transport. Weight calculations should account for everything being carried, including the horse or horses, equipment and any other load placed inside the trailer.

Heavier commercial and agricultural work

Once a trailer becomes part of a working day and regularly carries substantial loads, braked models are generally where buyers will be looking. Tippers, flatbeds and specialist commercial trailers provide much greater payload potential while offering configurations designed around particular industries and jobs.

The key is not to choose braked simply because it sounds like the more capable option. If an unbraked trailer comfortably handles everything you need to transport and falls within your vehicle’s limits, its simplicity may be a genuine advantage. Equally, trying to squeeze a heavier workload into a lightweight trailer to avoid moving up to a braked model is a false economy.

Choose around the load you actually need to carry, then make sure the trailer and towing vehicle are compatible.

Breakaway Cables and Secondary Couplings: What’s the Difference?

Both braked and unbraked trailers need protection in the event that the main coupling between the trailer and towing vehicle fails, but the systems used aren’t the same.

A braked trailer uses a breakaway cable. If the trailer becomes detached from the towing vehicle, the cable is designed to activate the trailer’s brakes before separating, helping bring the trailer to a stop.

An unbraked trailer uses a secondary coupling, typically a chain or strong cable. Because there are no trailer brakes to activate, its purpose is to keep the trailer connected to the towing vehicle if the main coupling fails, allowing the driver to bring the combination to a controlled stop. The Camping and Caravanning Club specifically highlights that a secondary coupling and a breakaway cable perform different functions and shouldn’t be confused with one another.

Whichever type of trailer you’re towing, these aren’t components to overlook. They should be correctly connected whenever you tow and checked regularly for damage or excessive wear.

Don’t Confuse Trailer Capacity With Towing Capacity

This is one of the most important points to understand when buying any trailer.

A trailer might be capable of operating at a particular maximum weight, but that doesn’t automatically mean your vehicle can tow it at that weight.

Imagine you’re looking at a braked trailer with a maximum authorised mass of 3,500kg. Your tow vehicle, however, has a maximum braked towing capacity of 2,500kg. The trailer’s higher rating doesn’t increase what the vehicle is permitted to tow. You still need to remain within the applicable limits for the vehicle and trailer combination.

The same principle applies to unbraked trailers. As we’ve already covered, the fact that an unbraked trailer can have a MAM of up to 750kg doesn’t mean every vehicle is capable of towing 750kg unbraked. This is why it’s worth looking at the complete setup rather than considering the trailer in isolation.

What About Your Driving Licence?

Trailer capability and vehicle towing capacity are only part of the picture. You also need to make sure you’re legally entitled to drive the vehicle and trailer combination you’re planning to use.

UK towing licence rules have changed over the years, which can make this area particularly confusing if you’re relying on older advice online.

Keeping these issues separate is important. Whether a trailer requires brakes, whether your vehicle is technically capable of towing it and whether you’re licensed for the combination are related questions, but they’re not interchangeable.

Braked Doesn’t Automatically Mean Better

With greater payload potential and their own braking systems, it’s easy to assume that a braked trailer is always the better purchase. For plenty of buyers, that simply isn’t the case.

If you’re regularly carrying heavy equipment or transporting cars, horses or machinery, you’ll naturally be looking towards a braked trailer. The additional capacity isn’t something you could sensibly replace with a lightweight unbraked model.

For lighter everyday use, however, an unbraked trailer has some genuine advantages.

There are fewer braking components to maintain, trailers can be lighter and more compact, and you aren’t paying for capacity that you may never use. If you’re taking garden waste to the tip, moving lighter equipment or handling occasional jobs around a property, simplicity can be exactly what you want.

This is why we’d avoid choosing between the two based on the braking system alone. Think about payload, dimensions, storage, frequency of use and the tow vehicle alongside the jobs you need the trailer to perform.

Buying for Occasional Use? Consider Hiring

There’s another option that’s easy to overlook when comparing trailers: you might not need to buy one at all. Payload and identification plates matter too. You need to know exactly what you’re buying and the weight at which the trailer is designed to operate.

For a buyer carrying relatively lightweight loads, an unbraked trailer can be a simple, convenient and cost-effective solution. Once the loads become heavier, a braked trailer provides the braking system and capacity required for more demanding transport.

The important thing is not to buy based on a label. Choose the trailer that suits the load, then make sure the trailer, tow vehicle and driver all work together as a legal and appropriate combination.
